Manipur: Door-to-Door Survey to Find Illegal Immigrants

IMPHAL: Manipur Chief Minister called the sheltering of illegal immigrants to be the biggest threat to the state on Sunday. He also mentioned that proper action will be initiated against those localities found harboring such foreigners at their homes.

A total of 613 people have been arrested in the past four-five days for violating the Inner Line Permit (ILP) regulations from across the state. Manipur is one of the few states of the country which need the Inner Line permit to enter. Meaning that anyone who does not belong to the state needs to take this permission from the state government through due process. The permission is also a time-bound one, meaning that at the end of the stipulated time, the person must either renew the validity or leave the state.

With the number of illegal immigrants from neighboring Myanmar and Bangladesh rising drastically, the state is taking strict measures to counter these steps. While Bangladeshi nationals often come to the state to fulfill the cheap labor requirement, immigration from Myanmar is common to avoid political unrest in the country.

Mentioning that the state will treat such actions very seriously, the chief minister said that door-to-door searches will be carried out across the state to detect violators. Serious action will be taken not only against the violator but also against the locals who rent out their properties such as persons or families.

"The indigenous population of the state in the whole country is microscopic. Unless such steps are taken, it will be difficult to save the indigenous population of the state

," N Biren Singh mentioned.

He urged the local people not to provide shelter to illegal immigrants in order to protect the language, culture, and identity of the small indigenous population.

The chief minister mentioned that one of the arrested persons is a Bangladeshi man who had entered Manipur in 1990 without any valid document. He later married a local Manipuri woman, procured an Aadhaar card, and proceeded to buy a plot of land in the state.
